Submission Information

The Journal of Legislation (JLEG) seeks to publish scholarly works focused on legislative, regulatory, and public policy matters regardless of authors’ political affiliations. We publish pieces analyzing issues of local, national, and international significance from legislators, policymakers, academics, and practitioners.

We strongly prefer to receive submissions online via Scholastica. Direct email submissions will also be accepted at ndlsjl@nd.edu. We typically will not consider hard copy submissions.

All submissions are automatically considered for publication in the bound edition of the Journal of Legislation and JLEG’s online supplement, the Journal of Legislation: Online.

Timing

JLEG accepts submissions on a rolling basis for inclusion in one of our two issues per volume, published in the spring and autumn, respectively. We generally review manuscripts submitted in the spring and summer for inclusion in the first issue of each volume and manuscripts submitted in the autumn and winter for inclusion in the second issue. Because JLEG is student-run, our editorial staff changes each academic year, so we typically do not consider pieces for publication in volumes succeeding an upcoming volume.

General Guidelines

JLEG prefers to publish pieces greater than 10,000 words in length but fewer than 25,000, including footnotes. Exceptions are made on a case-by-case basis. We also host one symposium per year, an event featuring speakers and discussion panels concerning one specific legislative topic. We may also consider shorter pieces addressing an upcoming symposium topic for publication. JLEG does not publish pieces submitted by current law students unaffiliated with the University of Notre Dame Law School.

Please visit our submissions page on Scholastica for more information about our submission guidelines.
